The Holy Gospel: Mark 12.38-44 Collect Eternal God, who caused all holy scriptures to be written for our learning, grant us so to hear them, read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest them, that we may embrace and ever hold fast the blessed hope of everlasting life, which you have given us in our Saviour Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. There will be one service at our church today to allow people the opportunity to attend the War Memorial at Remembrance Square. On November 11th each year we mark the great sacrifice of so many in war and commit ourselves to strive for peace wherever possible in this world. Those twin actions of remembrance and commitment are absolutely necessary if we are to do justice to Remembrance Day and understand the purpose behind the occasion. If all we do is remember without also considering what we should do in response we have fallen short of the mark and missed much of the meaning inherent in Remembrance Day. May you pause to remember during this time of remembrance and pledge to be a peacemaker wherever you can in life. The ability to remember and to find meaning in our memories is one of the things that makes us human. Without the ability to remember, and the ability to reflect upon those memories, we would be denied one of the most profound experiences we can have as human beings. Memory allows us to be connected to people, places and events in our past while giving meaning to our lives in the present.
